WHAT: High school students will speak on pressing issues affecting their lives to key Sacramento stakeholders, including Chief Daniel Hahn and members of Twin Rivers Board of Trustees and Sacramento County’s Board of Supervisors. This event is hosted by Liberty Towers, the Black Child Legacy Campaign Community Incubator Lead in North Highlands/Foothill Farms, and will honor leaders who have fulfilled promises to young people.
WHY: Those whose decisions affect the lives of young people benefit from direct participation with the communities they serve. Student engagement and positive youth development are effective strategies in youth services that help to reduce violence and create opportunity.

ABOUT THE BLACK CHILD LEGACY CAMPAIGN: The Black Child Legacy Campaign is the community-driven movement raising visibility and strengthening efforts of the Steering Committee on Reduction of African American Child Deaths (RAACD) to reduce the number of black child mortalities. Through the Black Child Legacy Campaign, community organizations, one in each of seven targeted neighborhoods, are being funded to serve as “Community Incubator Leads,” or lead organization, for the work in their neighborhood. The campaign has also pioneered the implementation of outstation County Multi-Disciplinary Teams (MDT), a unique partnership of county agencies and community-based organizations, with the goal of institutionalizing accessible and culturally relevant services in all seven RAACD neighborhoods.
In 2011, Supervisor Phil Serna convened the Blue Ribbon Commission on Disproportionate African American Child Deaths following the Child Death Review Team report that highlighted the disproportional rates of African American child deaths compared to other children. The Commission called for the creation of the Steering Committee on RAACD, which in turn created a strategic plan and implementation plan that is currently in year three of implementation. The effort works in collaboration with Sacramento County, First 5 Sacramento, the City of Sacramento and multiple community stakeholders and is managed by The Center at Sierra Health Foundation.
