Quincy Jones to receive NAACP’s highest honor July 23
Quincy Jones will have to shoehorn another trophy into a warehouse of honors accrued over his storied career as musician, arranger, composer, bandleader, producer and humanitarian.
The legend will receive the 99th Spingarn Medal, the NAACP’s highest honor, at the organization’s national convention July 23 in Las Vegas.
The medal, instituted in 1914 by then-chairman Joel E. Spingarn, is awarded for outstanding and noble achievement by an American of African descent. Among the 98 recipients to date are George Washington Carver, Mary McLeod Bethune, Thurgood Marshall, Jackie Robinson, Lena Horne, Bill Cosby, Harry Belafonte and Jessye Norman.
