Opening This Week: August Wilson’s Fences at the Sacramento Theatre Company – Directed by James Wheatley

STC is thrilled to return to The American Century Cycle, presenting August Wilson’s Fences. An iconic work set in 1957, a landmark year for the Civil Rights Movement, the play centers around Troy Maxson and his family, and the fences in our lives that can both nurture and protect us, yet also create obstacles to deny us emotional fulfillment.

August Wilson’s Fences is directed by Sacramento legend James Wheatley, founder and artistic director of Celebration Arts, a non-profit educational and performance organization providing performing arts training and opportunities to underserved communities, particularly African American residents in the Sacramento Metropolitan area. Fences was made into a critically acclaimed film in 2016, directed by and starring Denzel Washington, accompanied by Viola Davis who won an Oscar for her performance as Rose.
