The live webinar preceded the launch of the Girl Scouts’ Becoming Me program series.
It’s one thing for someone to migrate from Chicago’s South Side to the White House. It’s another for her to transition from eight years there to the top of the New York Times bestseller list with a memoir that’s as entertaining as it is moving and inspirational.
But it’s quite another for someone like Michelle Obama to spend over an hour with a handful of Girl Scouts, like she did last week during a free, live-streamed event.
And as they say, Obama didn’t just show up: she showed out.
Obama had me from the outset, when she shared two commonalities with this writer: an undying love for peanut butter, and her favorite Girl Scout cookie.
“I can eat Thin Mints by the sleeve full — they’re my favorites,” she admitted through a wry smile that we still miss. I have to say that it was a somewhat surprising admission, given her focus on nutrition while she was First Lady.
Everything in moderation, I hear!
“Nothing too fancy…I don’t want to interfere with their flavor,” Obama jokingly continued. “But I’m a huge peanut butter cookie fan. When I was young, all I would eat was peanut butter!”
Those revelations weren’t the only time that Obama let us know that she’s one of the people. She inspired her Girl Scout audience — and online viewers from all over the world — with her take on our last pandemic-fueled year.
“This year is teaching you that life is unpredictable,” Obama said. “We can either brace for things to go wrong, or relax into the fact that we’re not in charge of the things that go on.”
It was one of many moments during her hourlong chat when Obama’s humility was on full display.
