Sierra Donor Services Expands Scholarship Program, Offering Awards to Hispanic, Black & Filipino Nursing Students
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sierra Donor Services (SDS), the leading nonprofit Organ Procurement Organization in Northern California dedicated to saving and enhancing lives through organ, eye and tissue donation, is proud to expand its Lifesaver Nursing Scholarship Program to support Black, Hispanic and Filipino nursing students. In partnership with the Capitol City Black Nurses Association (CCBNA), the National Association of Hispanic Nurses (NAHN), and Philippine Nurses Association California Capital City (PNAC3), SDS has established an annual scholarship program aimed at promoting diversity and inclusion within the healthcare field.
SDS proudly supports the vital work of CCBNA, NAHN, and PNAC3 in advocating for nurses’ needs and improving health outcomes in communities affected by health disparities. Through this collaboration, SDS seeks to advance the recruitment, retention, and education of nurses, strengthening the pipeline of future healthcare professionals.

The scholarship program honored seven exceptional nursing students from three partner organizations. Karen Kurenty Laryea and Liwam Nerayo, representing CCBNA, were recognized at the 2nd Annual Scholarship Gala and Black Excellence event at the Kimpton Sawyer Hotel in Sacramento, California. Maria Espinoza, Leslie Rivas, and Alexandria Martinez, from NAHN, received their awards during SDS’s Scholarship Luncheon at the SDS Office in West Sacramento, California. Ma Milani Zabala and Mark Buan-Lagazo, representing PNAC3, were celebrated at the PNAC3 Gala held at the Civic Center in Elk Grove, California.
